How To Remove Excess Freon From Car AC

If freon is causing any sort of problem within your car AC’s system, you will be able to remove the excess freon with the help of some tools and an AC recovery machine.

How Does Freon Work?

Freon is not exclusively used in personal vehicles. Over the years, the gas has also been utilized in chest and upright freezers. A lot of commercial and industrial appliances will use freon for transportation and cold storage inside large warehouses. Dehumidifiers can use gas, as well.

Freon works due to a system of coils and compressions found inside the AC unit. When compressed, the gas will get quite hot. Freon moves through the coils, creating a very cool liquid. This cycle is a constant for your AC unit in your car. If the coolant leaks, the AC will cease blowing out cold air, making repairs a necessity, especially in the warmer summer months.

Figuring out whether or not freon is being used is not a complicated task, fortunately. By looking at your AC’s nameplate, you will be able to tell whether or not freon is being used. The nameplate provides information about the system, which includes safety certifications and electrical ratings. Contact the manufacturer of the system if you cannot find the nameplate or decipher the information.

How To Remove Freon From Your Car’s AC

Use this quick, step-by-step guide to properly remove any excess freon from your car’s AC:

  • Begin by putting on some personal protective equipment before attempting to remove the freon.
  • Locate the low-pressure AC service port that’s under the hood.
  • To find the port, reference your owner’s manual or search the back of the AC compressor.
  • The low-pressure port is the smaller of the two that you will find.
  • Use a wrench when closing the low-pressure service valve.
  • Attach a car AC recovery machine to condense the freon to vapor, removing it from the AC system.
  • Now re-open the low-pressure port.
  • Buy a new can of freon and attach this to the low-pressure port.
  • Turn your car on and run the AC to ensure it’s working properly.
  • Press the plunger as this will release the freon into the system.
