Your car’s climate control system is designed to keep you cool on hot days and warm during the chilly months. If neither your AC or heat is working, you’ve probably got an issue with the car’s blower fan.
Reasons Why AC And Heat Are Not Working In Your Car
Typically, there are three possible components that can go bad or fail, resulting in no AC or heat in the car. Let’s take a look at each of the issues to try to diagnose your car’s exact problem.
1. Bad Blower Fan Motor
Located behind the dashboard, the blower fan is responsible for pushing air through climate control vents. If the heater fails to blow hot air when the system is on, there is usually an issue with the blower fan.
Either the blower fan is not getting electrical power or, more likely, the motor has burned out completely. A blower fan motor is more likely to burn out over time, so be mindful of this when driving an older vehicle.
2. Bad Fuse
The fuse box is one of the first things any driver should check when there is any sort of climate control or electrical issue. If there was a short surge in the system, the fuse could blow to protect the electronic components from any damage. When this happens, though, the system will be inoperable until the fuse has been replaced.
Reference your owner’s manual for a fuse box diagram. Find the fuse that is associated to the AC blower motor. If the blower motor fuse is completely intact, then the problem occurred elsewhere. When the fuse is blown, replacing it with an identical fuse of the same amperage can get the system working again.
3. Faulty Blower Fan Resistor Assembly
If your fan motor is still working, but not operating as well as it could, it’s possible you’ll need to replace the blower fan resistor assembly. This is a simple electronic circuit that changes the resistance of the current that is sent to the blower motor.
This will enable multiple fan speeds. Replacing this circuit can give your system its full range of speed controls.
